The Solar System that We Call Home [Infographic]

Nov 28, 2016 | Science

From time immemorial, man has been fascinated by space and the celestial bodies that float in it- planets, stars, comets, moons etc. The Sun and our fellow planets in the Solar System particularly interested both astronomers and astrologers alike. In earlier times, our planet, Earth, was believed to be stationary and the center of the universe. That was until the early 16th century when the famous mathematician and astronomer, Copernicus, formulated a model which postulated that the Sun is at the center while other planets revolve around it. The subsequent invention of the telescope and the work of notable scientists and astronomers such as Galileo, Kepler and Newton helped develop a better understanding of our planetary system and the physical laws governing it. Their work laid the foundation for more advanced space research and subsequent exploration. In this infographic, we look at some interesting trivia about the planets in our Solar System, including stuff like name origins and how your weight will vary relative to what it is on Earth. [Note: Pluto is not included as a planet in this infographic as, in 2006, it was demoted from its status as a planet to a dwarf planet]
